Project: Specialised Dining Chairs & Sofas
Where: Dartford, Kent
Who: NHS Oxleas Trust – Bracton Centre

The Bracton Centre is a medium secure medical centre providing specialist forensic mental health services – including assessment, treatment and rehabilitation – and therefore cares for a number of inmates.

We carried out reupholstery of both dining chairs and sofas, which had been worn down with time, in danger of compromising the waterproof and hygiene qualities of the original fabric surface which are so important in a medical environment.  Client consultation therefore led to the choice of innovative antimicrobial vinyls – these fabrics not only have a coating sufficient to withstand rigorous NHS cleaning protocol, but also inhibit bacterial growth for superior hygiene management.

The dining chairs have heavily weighted bases to ensure the maintenance of a safe environment at the Bracton Centre; a new challenge for us, but one that was simply acknowledged and managed during the removal and reupholstery stages.  We also designed and added a PVC scuff-skirt around the base of the dining chairs to prolong service life and prevent wear from damaging the aesthetics.

The project ultimately ensured the high NHS standard of hygiene was being maintained, and the ‘new’ seating helped contribute to the modern and clean feel of the environment.
